Title: NEW ROM - BEEBRIS! (And CD/BJL File!)
Post by: Cyrano Jones on September 25, 2009, 11:06:13 am
The original Beebris was released in 1991 on the Atari ST as part of a mini-demo called "Apathetic Games" released by The Law of The Bad Brew Crew. The full source code for this is already available and can be found at the official D-Bug and Automation website.

Our 'tribute' version was done in roughly a week to celebrate not only Beebris turning 18 years of age, but also 'Tetris' celebrating it's 25th anniversary! We have enhanced the graphics in the game, and are now using the introduction music during gameplay, as was always intended by the original musician, Floyd. Also, for everyone's additional enjoyment and continuing fun, we have added a web-based high score system, which you can access from the links below this text.

And finally, to make things even nicer, we have included the full source code for our version, so you can compare it with the original ST code if you get really bored! At the very least, someone might find this useful.

We hope you all enjoy playing this game as much as we have whilst making it.

Grab it at our website now! (http://reboot.atari.org)

Thanks for the screenshots, zero :)

Once we get the CD-ROM version online we will probably run a competition along much the same lines as Matmooks, so get practicing! :-)

I wait for Jag CD version because I have no bjl option.

So reboot is back?

I extracted the BEEBRIS.TXT file from the Apathetic Games disk image. Here it is for you all:

   Beebris 2.71 updated documentation........

   Hi freaks! Law here (that's The Law/BBC, remember?) - This folder
contains a screen from the totally unfinished Total Apathy Megademo
that was supposed to be released by the BBC some years ago. As it
looks more and more likely that this demo will never see the light
of day I have decided to give the world..........

            BEEBRIS... Version 2.71ish

  The first release of this game was (much to my embarassment) the
assembled version of the wrong source file, and contained an annoying
little bug where the ramdom blocks in the arcade mode caused entire
lines of blocks to turn yellow!!!

   I have also changed the tracker player from NoiseTracker (by the
Empire) to ProTracker (by Griff of Inner Circle) because this sounded
sooooooo(!) much better.

   When clicked on you will be presented with the title picture and a
rather wicked SoundTracker module (written by Floyd) - This picture
will give you the rundown on the game.

   The samples used in the game were taken from the Lynx version of
Klax (Which is well good and if you have a Lynx then I suggest you
go and get this game!) I hope Atari/Tengen don't mind.

   Also, I hope Mirrorsoft don't object to the blatent ripoff of their
game (but their version WAS crap!)

   This version was coded because there does not exist a full version of
the arcade version of Tetris on the ST (as far as I know). I also decided
to add a few more things (Try the Beebris+/Arcade+ options)

   Anyway, if Total Apathy ever does appear then this game will feature on
that disk.......

   A Description of the various modes/functions will now follow:-

   Functions
   =========

   At the start of the game the following keys function as...

   '1' - Select game type...... Beebris
   '2' - Select game type...... Beebris+
   '3' - Select game tyep...... Aracde
   '4' - Select game type...... Arcade+
   '+' - Increment the level number for the game type (on keypad)
   '-' - Decrement the level number for the game type (on keypad)
   'Q' - Quit!. This will return you to the desktop.

   During the game......

   'P' - Puase.
       This does just what it says.
   ESC - Abore.
       This will abore the current game.
   'Q' - Quit!.
       This will not return you to the desktop as advertised.
       It will instead return you to the main menu.
   Cursor keys.
       These control the rotation, movement and drop
       for the pieces under user control.

   Modes
   =====

   *Note: All games use the 'cement' method for block dropping, ie
     the blocks will 'slide' horizontally before settling into
          place in the well.

   BEEBRIS
   =======

   This is a standard version of the game. Points are scored for
making complete horizontal lines of blocks in the well. The higher
the block was 'quick dropped' (by pulling down on the stick) the
more points you will score.

   Every ten lines the level number will increase (you will hear a
musical ditty to denote this). As the levels get higher the speed of
the game will increase. If the level gets quite a bit higher you will
notice the blocks starting off from a lower position in the well.

   BEEBRIS+
   ========

   This is the same as above except that I have added some new shapes
to the game, making it quite a bit harder to play.

   Also, the one by one block is not a normal block, it is a BOMB(!!)
The line that this block settles on will be erased and all above it
will move down one line (You will also get awarded a line made, making
your lines-to-next-level decrease)

   ARCADE
   ======

   This is SIMILAR to the arcade version of beebris (I'm a student who
can't afford to play the game all the time. It costs too much). Basically
there are four different types of levels....

   (1) - Normal level.

      The object here is to make 10 lines. The rules are as for
      Beebis mode.

   (2) - Progressive Advances.

      As for (1) except that every now and again the computer
      will move all the blocks in the well up one line and will
      insert a random line in at the bottom.

   (3) - Random Blocks.

      As for (1) except that every now and again the computer
      will insert a new block into the well at a random
      position.

   (4) - Pre-Built Well.

      As for (1) except that the well will contain a pre-
      selected pattern of blocks to start the level off with.

   ARCADE+
   =======

   This is as above, but also contains all the features implemented
in the BEEBRIS+ mode. If you can beat this at level 40 then you will
gain my undying respect.......

   Troubleshooting!
   ================

   This game has not been tested on a 512k 1.09 TOS. If it fails to
load (due to a lack of memory) then please create an AUTO folder on
a fresh disk and copy the BEEBRIS.TOS file into it, then rename the
.TOS file to BEEBRIS.PRG, and autoload from there. If you give a
copy of this game to anyone (and I hope it spreads far and wide) then
please ensure that it is this version, as this doc will be present.

   And Finally(!)
   ==============

   Before I go I just want to appologise for the cock-up with the
other version, and also I want to greet a few people in ST land...

   Hi to.......   Andy T. Arfling      Paul
      The Pilot      Ian
      Appollo         Nigel
      D-Zine         Rob
      Vapour         E.G.B.
      Dean         Xerud
      Chris         Nookey
      Dack         Turbo Mack
      Brian         HAL 9000
      Colin         GilM2
      Stan T. Man      and Bob!

   Enough crap typed here...... go and play it.

            The Law (Retired cracker)

           -----------------------
                  THE END

I thought the response to this quick tribute would be more 'meh, another tetris' but we've been really pleased with the comments. Since seeing some of the bigger scores a few people have asked for tips, so I'll write some here... but the ST doc tells you all you need to know ;)

General: It's all about points! Points make prizes & if you're hoping for some exclusive low-volume jaguar goodies you should not miss out on getting those high scores & submitting them to the highscore tables. Heads-up: you might want to take a photo for evidence. ;) No competition has been announced yet, though (/me zips his mouth).

All modes:

Pull the blocks down & do it in one movement! You get more points for pulling the blocks down faster & without stopping for rotations - do your rotations first.

Learn the shapes/colours. You need to know what shape is there the instant you see it in the NEXT: box - learn the colours & you'll not have to even think about how they might fit, you'll be on auto-pilot. Essential in the fastest levels or anytime when the well is filling up.

Controls: the controls lag a bit in slow levels & are twitchy in the fast ones - be prepared! It's easy to get used to but essential in those crazy super-fast times - that's when you need the 12yo Japanese zen arcade ninja skills!

Learn when the speedups occur & when they revert back to slowness. Be ready - it's easy to lose concentration when the slowness comes back.

Arcade: When you level up the screen will clear. Just concentrate on making 10 lines & forget about making a mess on top out of the way ;)

Arcade+: Same as arcade with the added point that you should ignore the ugly pieces that don't fit & really just concentrate on making 10 lines! Don't be scared to dump non-useful pieces well out of the way on top & pile them high, you just need those 10 lines & all will be clear again. So work on a 'good' side, pile the shit on top & then get to work completing the good stuff. This will get trickier as the well pushes up, but just adapt. 1x1 red blocks will clear the line they land on - plan for that - you might even get 5 of them in a row like I have - it's purely random. Use them to clear the 'junk' that blocks almost-complete lines, don't waste them on stuff that is deep down a hole or high up the junk - they are best used in order to help you get at almost-complete lines.

People waiting for the CD version: Sorry, it does not exist yet, we have friends who are making it happen though, but we have no Jaguar CD hardware in the group & no experience in making Jag CDs. It's good to see that people have been making their own CD versions - good effort. Our games are there to be played for everyone. Have fun!

sh3-rg .. level 27!!   Awesome.

As for being another Tetris... there might be another Tetris but this had a lot more refinement to it as a Tetris game.

Started thinking 'wtf is going to happen at level 40... wondering if it kept on playing or crashed or said game over or... distracted myself & fucked it up :P

Ah well, there's always tomorrow ;)

Don't dare come near me at the Outline Beebris tournament unless you want some PWNAGE! hehe

Oooh, Avatar love! Interphase was one of my favourite ST games, at least when my mouse port still worked.

I always thought it'd be a great idea to re-make it as a Jag game, much larger 3D environments, better graphics, possibly video cutscenes for her messages, etc.

and now standard bin/cue, too, I believe.

Thanks again to Matmook & FrediFredo for their efforts in making this happen. We promise to buy a CD unit & read up on how to do that ourselves for the next release so we don't have to bother you ;)
